Orton Waterville, St Mary

Grant awarded: £2,000 Grant

The project was intended to remove the 1940’s cement render to cure the dampness inside the tower which was decaying timber work. But on commencement of the work, the cement render was found to be very thick in places and covered up some shattered stonework, probably damaged by the frost acting on a very wet wall. In one area on the west face, some 3 square metres of stainless steel mesh was needed before the lime based render could be applied. A £12,000 project soon turned into an £18,000 one but once started the work had to be completed.
